
SpaceX Unveils Starmind, a Plan for Up to 1 Million Orbital AI Satellites
SpaceX confirmed Starmind, a megaconstellation of up to one million satellites that run AI inference in orbit on solar-powered processors and beam results to Earth in milliseconds, bypassing terrestrial data centers.
SpaceX has confirmed Starmind, an audacious plan to place up to one million satellites in orbit that would run artificial-intelligence inference in space rather than in data centers on the ground. The company detailed the megaconstellation in a filing with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.
Compute That Lives in Orbit
Under the design, each satellite carries solar-powered onboard processors that perform AI inference directly in orbit. Results are then beamed back to Earth in milliseconds over Starlink's high-bandwidth optical laser mesh, sidestepping the terrestrial power, cooling, and real-estate constraints that increasingly bottleneck the AI buildout.
The satellites would fly between roughly 500 and 2,000 kilometers, clustered at 50-kilometer intervals to serve different workloads and latency profiles. SpaceX says the system would remain solar-powered for more than 99 percent of its operation, using radiative cooling to shed heat, with each satellite designed for a five-year life.
The scale is staggering by design. SpaceX argues that once a fully reusable Starship is operational, it could loft "one million tonnes per year of satellites generating 100kW of compute power per tonne" — adding on the order of 100 gigawatts of orbital compute annually.
From xAI to AI1 Prototypes
The initiative folds directly into SpaceX's AI ambitions following its acquisition of xAI in February 2026. The company plans to launch its first AI1 prototype satellites in early 2027, with volume production to follow at a dedicated "Gigasat" manufacturing facility late that year.
Musk Draws a Line
Elon Musk moved to tamp down speculation about a broader hardware push, denying a separate Wall Street Journal report that SpaceX or xAI was developing a consumer "AI device." For now, the message is that the company's AI hardware bet is aimed squarely at orbit, not the pocket — an infrastructure play rather than a gadget.
Regulators have yet to sign off, and SpaceX has requested waivers from standard deployment-milestone rules. But with the only track record operating constellations at Starlink's scale, SpaceX has positioned Starmind as the most concrete attempt yet to move heavy compute off the planet.
