TSMC Follows Samsung and SK Hynix Into Price Surge With Surprise 7nm Hikes

TSMC is raising prices on its mature 7nm-class nodes, catching customers off guard as AI demand tightens capacity across the entire Asian chip supply chain — not just at the leading edge.

TSMC is raising prices on its 7nm-class process nodes, according to supply chain reports, catching customers off guard and extending a wave of increases that began with Samsung and SK Hynix in memory to the foundry business — including nodes long considered mature, stable and safely commoditized.

The hikes spread beyond the leading edge

Price increases at the bleeding edge — 2nm and 3nm — have been expected and largely accepted by customers desperate for AI accelerator capacity. What surprised the supply chain is the extension to 7nm, a workhorse node for automotive, networking and mid-range mobile chips that had been running below full utilization as recently as last year.

The driver is the same one reshaping every corner of the industry: AI demand has soaked up so much advanced capacity that overflow orders are cascading down the node ladder, while shared bottlenecks in advanced packaging and substrates lift costs across the board.

Customers squeezed from both sides

For fabless designers, the hikes land on top of memory prices that have already surged as Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron redirect output toward HBM for AI accelerators. Consumer device makers now face rising costs on both logic and memory simultaneously — pressure that analysts expect to show up in smartphone and PC prices into 2027.

TSMC reports earnings on July 16, where analysts at Citibank and UBS have set aggressive targets on expectations that the pricing power is durable.

Asia's chokepoint economics

The episode underlines how concentrated the AI supply chain remains: Asia produces roughly 72 percent of the world's semiconductors and 95 percent of the most advanced chips. When demand runs hot, pricing power flows to a handful of firms in Taiwan and Korea — and everyone else pays.
