Xiaomi's MiMo Becomes World's Most-Used AI Model as Chinese Models Overtake US on OpenRouter
Xiaomi's MiMo model has topped OpenRouter's global usage charts, part of a broader shift that has seen Chinese open models overtake US rivals in weekly token consumption.
Xiaomi's MiMo family of models has climbed to the top of OpenRouter's global usage rankings, a milestone that underscores how quickly Chinese open-weight models have moved from challengers to market leaders on the developer routing platform.
A shift in global token consumption
OpenRouter, which routes API traffic across dozens of model providers, has become a widely watched barometer of real-world developer demand. Recent data shows Chinese models collectively overtaking US rivals in weekly token consumption, with total throughput measured in the trillions of tokens per week. Xiaomi's MiMo model alone accounts for roughly 21 percent of traffic on the platform, while OpenAI's share has slipped to well below 10 percent.
The reversal has been rapid. Over the past year, the US share of OpenRouter token consumption has fallen from roughly 70 percent to around 30 percent, as Chinese labs shipped competitive open-weight models at aggressive prices.
How MiMo reached the top
MiMo first drew attention when it appeared anonymously on OpenRouter under a codename and began topping daily usage charts before Xiaomi confirmed it as the source. The flagship MiMo-V2-Pro is a large mixture-of-experts model with a long context window, tuned for agentic and coding workloads where token volumes run high.
Beyond raw benchmarks, Xiaomi has leaned on distribution. A large token-incentive program distributed tens of trillions of free tokens to developers within weeks of launch, seeding usage across coding assistants and autonomous agents that consume tokens at scale.
What it signals
The usage data does not measure revenue, and free-token programs inflate raw throughput. But it reflects a genuine shift in where developers are running inference. Chinese labs including MiniMax, Stepfun and Tencent now sit alongside Xiaomi near the top of OpenRouter's charts, a concentration that would have been hard to imagine a year ago.
For US providers, the trend is a reminder that open weights and low pricing are reshaping the commodity end of the model market, even as frontier proprietary systems remain in high demand for the most complex tasks.
