Anthropic Commits $150M to 'Claude Corps,' a 1,000-Fellow Nonprofit AI Program

The paid, year-long fellowship places early-career workers in nonprofits across America to deploy Claude, with the first cohort's applications closing July 17.

Anthropic has launched Claude Corps, a national fellowship committing an initial $150 million to train 1,000 early-career workers to use its Claude AI and embed them full-time inside nonprofits across the United States.

How It Works

Fellows are paid $85,000 a year to spend twelve months, full-time and in person, helping host organizations use AI to boost efficiency and mission impact. The program is structured as a three-way partnership: Anthropic funds it, sets strategy, and provides Claude expertise; CodePath — the largest US provider of collegiate computer science education — acts as employer of record and leads programming; and Social Finance handles measurement and will build a longer-term financial vehicle to help the program scale.

Eligibility is deliberately broad: anyone over 18 with under two years of full-time work experience can apply, regardless of educational background. Applications for the first cohort of 100 fellows close July 17, with that group beginning in October 2026. Two further cohorts start in January and August 2027, with applications open on a rolling basis.

Why It Matters

Claude Corps is a bet on distribution as much as goodwill. Nonprofits are chronically under-resourced and slow to adopt new technology, and placing trained AI practitioners inside them addresses a genuine gap — while also seeding Claude fluency across a swath of civil society and building an on-ramp for early-career workers into AI-adjacent roles.

The move fits a broader pattern of AI labs investing in workforce and access programs as scrutiny of the technology's labor impact intensifies — a theme underscored this week by the ILO's finding that generative AI could reshape nearly 80 million jobs across Southeast Asia alone. Whether a thousand fellows meaningfully move the needle on nonprofit capacity, or primarily on Claude's footprint, will become clearer as the first cohort takes up its posts this fall.
