Digital Realty, one of the world's largest data center operators, has announced a total investment of nearly S$7 billion in Singapore, with S$4.3 billion earmarked for new data center developments. The announcement cements Singapore's position as a premier destination for AI infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region and reflects surging demand for low-latency AI inference capacity close to enterprise customers.

Innovation Lab and Expansion

A centerpiece of the investment is the Digital Realty Innovation Lab (DRIL), which will be housed at the company's Loyang facility and is expected to launch in the second half of 2026. The lab will serve as a testing ground for next-generation cooling technologies, energy-efficient designs, and AI-optimized infrastructure configurations. Digital Realty's Singapore workforce has nearly doubled to more than 300 employees, with plans to grow to 400 by 2030 as operations scale.

Singapore as an AI Inference Hub

The investment thesis is straightforward: as AI models move from training to deployment, inference workloads are exploding — and they need to be served from locations close to end users. Singapore's position at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, combined with its political stability, robust power grid, and strong rule of law, makes it a natural hub for serving AI applications across the region. The announcement was made at GITEX AI Asia at Marina Bay Sands, where Digital Realty executives outlined the company's long-term vision for the market.

Part of a Broader Trend

Digital Realty's commitment complements a wave of similar investments from hyperscalers and infrastructure providers. Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Bridge Data Centres have all announced major Singapore expansions in recent months, collectively pouring billions into the city-state's data center ecosystem. For Singapore, the challenge now shifts from attracting investment to managing its consequences — particularly around power consumption and land use in one of the world's most space-constrained nations.
