Google and Intel Deepen AI Infrastructure Partnership for Cloud and Inference

Google Cloud is deploying Intel's latest Xeon 6 processors and custom IPUs as part of an expanded multiyear partnership focused on AI inference and cloud workloads.

Google and Intel have announced an expanded multiyear partnership that will see Google Cloud deploy Intel's Xeon 6 processors and custom infrastructure processing units (IPUs) across its global data center fleet. The deal positions Intel as a key supplier for the AI inference and cloud computing workloads that are becoming the backbone of Google's enterprise offerings.

The CPU Renaissance

The partnership reflects a broader shift in the AI industry. While GPUs have dominated the conversation around AI training, the transition from building models to deploying them at scale has reignited demand for high-performance CPUs. Inference workloads, which account for the majority of AI computing in production, often run more efficiently on optimized CPU architectures than on expensive GPU clusters.

Google Cloud will integrate Xeon 6 chips into its Compute Engine and Kubernetes Engine services, offering enterprise customers new instance types purpose-built for AI inference, media processing, and data analytics. The custom IPUs will handle networking and infrastructure offloading, freeing CPUs and GPUs to focus on computation rather than data movement.

Market Reaction

Intel's stock rose approximately 5 percent on the announcement, its strongest single-day gain in months. KeyBanc Capital Markets raised its price target on Intel to $70 following an Asia supply-chain tour, citing tightening chip supply across the server CPU market and growing confidence in Intel's manufacturing roadmap.

Analysts noted that the server CPU shortage is becoming as acute as the GPU crunch that defined 2024 and 2025. As every major cloud provider races to deploy AI services, demand for the processors that run the supporting infrastructure has outstripped available supply, creating a bottleneck that benefits established chipmakers like Intel.

Implications for Cloud Computing

The expanded partnership gives Google Cloud a diversified hardware strategy that reduces its dependence on any single chip supplier. For Intel, the deal provides a high-volume anchor customer at a critical moment in its turnaround effort, validating the Xeon 6 architecture as competitive for the most demanding AI cloud workloads.
