Tokyo-based JAPAN AI has completed a ¥1.9 billion (roughly $13 million) Series B funding round, drawing participation from JAFCO Group, Nissay Capital, FCE and Resona Capital — a lineup of blue-chip domestic investors that says as much about corporate Japan's AI appetite as the round itself.

Building Agents for Japan's DX Push

JAPAN AI builds AI agent products for enterprise customers, and the new capital will go toward talent acquisition, expanding and improving AI agent capabilities, and deepening AI integration with marketing SaaS. The company frames its mission around supporting corporate "DX and AX" — digital transformation and AI transformation — a category that has become one of the most reliably funded in the Japanese market as enterprises confront acute labor shortages.

The investor roster is notable for its institutional weight: JAFCO is Japan's largest venture firm, Nissay Capital is the VC arm of insurance giant Nippon Life, and Resona Capital belongs to one of the country's biggest banking groups. For Japanese enterprise AI startups, that kind of backing doubles as customer validation — the corporate networks behind these funds are exactly the buyers JAPAN AI sells to.

Japan's Startup Moment

The round lands amid a broader revival of Japan's startup ecosystem. Silicon Valley venture firms are increasingly scouting Japan for the next generation of startups, as Nikkei Asia noted this week, and the government's ¥1 trillion national AI plan — approved in December and funding domestic foundation model development from this fiscal year — is expected to seed a wave of new AI companies and spin-offs.

Domestic champions are scaling fast: Sakana AI reached a $2.65 billion valuation on its Series B, and strategic investors like NTT, KDDI and Sony have made generative AI startups a priority target. JAPAN AI's raise is modest by global megaround standards, but it fits the pattern that matters — Japanese institutional money, flowing into Japanese AI companies, aimed at the automation of Japanese work.
